Scratching the Surface with Grey or Maroon Scuff Pads/Rolls!

The grey Scotch pads/rolls are not an alternative to sanding. Instead the pads are designed to put fine scratches in the primer or paint, providing the finish needed to ensure that subsequent coats adequately bond to the surface. Good intercoat adhesion prevents one layer of paint from peeling from another.

The scratches that the grey Scotch pads produce are equivalent to those produced when sanding with 600-800 grit sandpaper. You can also use the pads to scuff a painted surface prior to clear coating. Unless you are clear coating a metallic paint, dont worry that these fine scratches will be visible through the clear coat, they wont. The tooth that the scratches give to the substrate also allows the paint or clear coat to grip the surface, preventing sagging on vertical surfaces.

When scuffing up a surface, you need to scratch up any shiny surfaces that you are painting until they are dull. On an older painted surface you should clean the substrate prior to scuffing in the same way that you would prep a surface prior to vinyl application. Cleaning the surface prevents driving any surface contaminants into the paint. The contaminants could compromise intercoat adhesion. After cleaning, scuff the surface. Merely scratch the surface dry until it is uniformly dull. Then clean surface again to remove any residue using a lint-free rag and isopropyl alcohol.

The red is a very fine grade pad, a perfect solution whether you are finishing flat panels or contoured surfaces. Ideal for awkward areas, like door shuts or engine compartments. Easy to cut into desired lengths for hand sanding or use with orbital sanders.

General purpose for surface conditioning, transport primer preparation, removal of oxidisation and light rust. Also ideal for commercial vehicles for preparing aluminium panels prior to priming for rivet heads.
